More informations about the Vallée Blanche
The best way to enjoy Chamonix is to discover it with a moutain guide.
And moreover if you want to enjoy the beautiful scenes of the Mont-Blanc, which offers you a unique off-piste domain, the presence of a moutain guide is vital. He will make you discover this dreamful world, but he also gives you better understanding of the possible dangers that crevasses represent and can help you immediatly and efficiently.
The Vallée Blanche is a downhill of 20 Kms and with a difference in altitude of 2,500 m from the top to the bottom. The journey is accessible to skiers with an intermediate level. This fantastic well-known downhill takes place between tops at more than 4,000 m and impressive glaciers. And you can access this place from Chamonix, thanks to the aerial tramway of the Aiguille du Midi.
Journey in the Vallée Blanche:
You will meet your moutain guide at the aerial tramway station of the Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix, it will take you to an altitude of 3,842 m in only a few minutes. Once you've joined the top of the moutain, you will first be roped up and climb down a rigde.
Some 20 meters lower, you will then be able to put your skis on and start the downhill of the Vallée Blanche.
You can choose between different ways according to you technical knowledge, your level or your physical condition. But whatever way you choose, you will be surrounded by the most beautiful views. The easiest one, which is also the classical one, is accessible to every intermediate skier (able to ski on red pistes)
The more experienced skiers would prefer more technical journeys. Whatever your level is, the guide will evaluate which ways are the better for you.
The downhill of the Vallée Blanche enable you to practise a wide range of off-piste skiing, from powdery snow to heavier and denser snow, you then have to be able to ski on different snow types.
Return to Chamonix, through a skiing path or with the Montenvers train, when the snow depth does not allow skiing.
It is a 20 km itinerary in high altitude on snow-covered glaciers with crevasses. It is not a secured ski run: there are no run markers, no piste basher, and no ski patrol. The descent takes four to five hours with the first third above 3000 m. Keep a full day for this trip. Arete vallee blanche • The access to the glacier from the cable car is a walk down a thin ridge. Part of the winter, this ridge is equipped with a fixed rope. However it is safer with crampons.
• You need to be a good and fit skier to enjoy this long itinerary in high altitude, with changes of snow and difficult passages in the “seracs”(ice falls). Cold, altitude and stress can reduce the abilities of any skier.
• Do not take with you too young kids even if they are good skiers (cold, attitude, exhaustion).
• Take some warm clothing, a harness (even if you don’t rope up), an ARVA (avalanche transceiver) , a whistle, hot drinks and food, hire a professional guide if you don’t trust your ability.
• Do not go if the forecast is bad, the situation can become dramatic if the fog or the bad weather comes in (you might get lost). It is not advisable to leave after 1 pm. The return at Montenvers needs to be done at the latest at 4.30 pm.
• Make sure you are able to do it!
